ROSWELL — Led by senior Donavin Sanchez, the Portales High boys golf team moved into third place after Monday’s opening round of the Spring Classic golf tournament, hosted by Roswell High and Roswell Goddard.

Playing at the New Mexico Military Institute course, Sanchez shot a three-under-par 69 for the second-lowest score of the day, trailing only Ty Black of District 4-3A rival Lovington (68).

Lovington shot 294 and has a five-stroke lead over Roswell High in boys competition. Behind Portales is Socorro (307) and Goddard (309) in the 13-team competition.

Portales’ girls finished the first day in a tie for 10th with Ruidoso, each with scores of 429. The boys and girls switch courses for today’s final 18 holes.

The young PHS girls squad, consisting of senior Amber McCasland and the rest freshmen and eighth-graders, was led by a 99 from eighth-grader Paige Hartman. Deming leads the tournament at 345, 10 shots ahead of Alamogordo and Artesia.
