Floyd High School sophomore Leon Mendoza isn’t a flashy guy. But baseball coach Darwin Chenault said he’s a good person who just works hard on and off the field and stays out of trouble.
“If you ask him to do something, there is no doubt he will go do it,” Chenault said. “He works very hard to best of his ability.
“My sons play with him on the basketball team, the team likes him. He’s the type of player you only have to tell him once, (and you might) have to tell other players 10 times or more.
Mendoza plays football, basketball, baseball and runs track. In baseball Chenault had him playing outfield, but moved him to second base in their game on Tuesday in junior varsity.
“He made a lot of good plays in the game,” Chenault said. “He’s got a really good glove, he catches just about everything he can get to.”
Mendoza has played baseball for a long time, but stopped in seventh grade. This season a friend asked him to play again.
Mendoza says his favorite position to play in baseball is "the bench and outfield because I’m lazy. I don’t like to do much.”
“I work hard because that’s what I know how to do,” Mendoza said. “So I won’t get the Mendoza call.”
The Mendoza call is his nickname for when he does something wrong while playing a sport.
Football coach Rafael Roybal said for a sophomore, Mendoza does a good job defensively.
“He surprises me every day,” Roybal said.
Mendoza played guard, center and nose guard for the Broncos, who reached the state 8-man semifinals.
“I got a lot of Mendoza calls there playing football from coach Roybal,” Mendoza said.
