Senior Brandon Adkins pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the opener and the Portales Rams swept at District 4-3A doubleheader from New Mexico Military, winning 11-1 and 12-0 at Ram Field.
Adkins walked four and struck out nine in the opener for his first career no-hitter. He also hit a couple of batters and was able to ecape a couple of bases-loaded jams.
Both games were called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Portales (7-6, 5-1 district) won its fourth and fifth games in a row.
“I just hit my spots and we had a few good plays on defense,” Adkins said. “Martin (Mendoza had a little diving play at first. I was shocked when he got that.”
Portales scored in every turn at bat in the opener, breaking a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the second.
Shawn Carrasco’s two-run single keyed a four-run Rams fifth. David Rodriguez led Portales’ 13-hit attack with three hits.
“We hit pretty well against Lovington (in a sweep of the Wildcats on Tuesday), and it just carried over to today,” Rams coach Arturo Ontiveros said. “The wind kind of gave us a little problem.
“My hat’s off to Adkins; he kept the (Colts) off-balance. The thing we’ve really got to work on with him is getting his walks and his pitch count down.”
In game two, the Rams juimped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, keyed by RBI doubles from Pablo Urioste and Eric Aguilar. They added nine runs in the second and made it easy for senior Logan Erf, who struck out six and tossed a five-hit shutout.
The Colts (3-14, 1-7) were simply dominated, NMMI coach Charlie Ward said.
“Portales is just the better team,” Ward said. “We’re young and we make a lot of mistakes. We had chances (to score) early, but we just couldn’t get things done.”
