A sister city boys rivalry is on tap in the second day of the Bill Wahlman Invitational, set for today at the Bill Wahlman Tennis Complex and Eastern New Mexico University’s Zia Tennis Courts.
The fifth-place matchup, set for noon at the Wahlman Complex, pits Portales against Clovis. The Rams took a first-round loss, 6-3 to Hope Christian, and defeated Artesia 6-3.
“We had some really good tennis, had a lot of competitive teams,” said Portales boys coach Brian Kirchner. “We had a nice day, so that helped.”
The Rams will face a Clovis team that suffered a first-round loss to Raton and defeated Ruidoso in the consolation bracket.
The Portales girls, meanwhile, are out quickly after a surprise loss to Hope Christian.
“They have improved tremendously since last year,” Portales girls coach Sara Bulls said. “It’s amazing how far they’ve came along.”
The loss set up a consolation-round match with Artesia, which had already beaten Portales twice in the last seven days. The Bulldogs made it three in a row with a 6-3 win.
The Clovis girls defeated Raton, and play in a 10 a.m. semifinal today against Ruidoso. The Lady Cats’ next matchup will be either Hope Christian or Santa Fe High (8 a.m. semifinal), in either the title (4 p.m.) or third-place match (2 p.m.). All four matches are at ENMU.
Bulls said Friday matches ran late, and a consolation bracket game between Raton and Robertson’s girls will start at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wahlman Complex, with Artesia facing the winning in a noon matchup for fifth-place at ENMU
