ROSWELL — The Portales Lady Rams ran into a buzzsaw Thursday night.
Roswell High handed Portales a pair of losses, winning the opener 11-1 in five innings (10-run rule) and taking the nightcap 8-0.
Senior Raquel Grejada pitched a six-hitter for the Lady Coyotes (10-6) in the opener. Grejada gave up an unearned run in the fifth inning when freshman Kelsey Laurenz singled and eventually scored on an error, but Roswell pushed over five in the bottom half to end it.
Laurenz went 2-for-2 for the Lady Rams (5-6). Junior Amanda Marquez went the distance in the circle for Portales, allowing 12 hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Lady Coyotes scored twice in the first inning of the second game, then broke it open with five in the fifth for a 7-0 lead. Roswell freshman DeSean Varnado pitched a complete-game four-hit shutout.
The Lady Coyotes managed 11 hits off junior LeAnne Blaeser, who walked one and struck out one over six innings.
“We just have a lot of work to do,” Lady Rams coach Robbie Crowley said. “We made too many mistakes today.
“Roswell can hit the ball; they always have. They’re a well-coached team.”
Portales is scheduled to play at West Las Vegas on Saturday.
