Portales freshman Veronica Ayala stretches for her long jump attempt during Thursday’s track meet at Portales High School.

The Portales track teams qualified three athletes, with the boys squad taking second place, at its home meet Thursday afternoon.

The Rams, last year’s third-place finisher in Class 3A, scored 99 points to finish behind District 4-3A rival Lovington (126).

“They competed very well,” Portales coach Glenn Johnson said. “The relays competed well.”

Cody Small hit state qualifying marks in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles.

In girls action, Portales scored 58 points to finish in third behind Robertson (94) and Clovis Christian (62).

“It was really our first meet,” Portales coach Sammy Lee said. “We went to Dexter, but it got rained out after the first event.

“I clerked the meet, so I didn’t get to see much of the meet, but looking at our times for a first meet, it was really good.”

Portales got one first place, with a time of 18.51 seconds from Alexis Orcutt in the 100-meter hurdles. Jenna Wagner qualified in the triple jump with a mark of 31-11 for second place.

Portales returns to action April 9 in Lovington.
