Portales claimed three of five tiebreakers, but the visiting Roswell Coyotes took just about everything else in a pair of 7-2 wins Thursday at Bill Wahlman Tennis Complex.
The Rams were able to steal a couple of wins from Roswell in singles and doubles action. Walker Partin, Kacy Vigil, Makynzi Whited and Shelby Lucero were only players able to win matches over a tough Roswell team.
Portales girls coach Sara Bulls said the team played pretty well and came out fighting.
“We have areas we’ve got to improve in,” Bulls said. “We need to be quicker in getting to the ball and work on consistency. We had some really good rallies, but we couldn’t get the point and ended up giving them the final shot.”
Partin got into his groove after beating Roswell’s Angel Portillo, 6-1, 6-1 and Vigil was able to put away Roswell’s Ivan Ibesto after a shaky start, 3-6, 7-6, (7-4) (10-6). Shelby Lucero won her tie-breaker with Roswell’s Bailey Martinez, 6-2, 2-6, (10-6).
Junior Makynzi Whited was the other Lady Ram to win her match against Meagan Sanford, 7-5, 4-6 (10-8).
The doubles team of Walker/Ryan Wood won their doubles set in 9-7 over Portrillo/Freddy Romeo team.
Portales boys coach Brian Kirchser said this was Partin’s first match and he has only a had a few days of practice since the Ram basketball season ended Friday.
“He played real well, he won both of his matches,” Kirchser said. “I believe having the other players playing in their spots now has helped the team. We had a couple of close matches and tie-breakers. They really fought hard in the game for them being a fairly young team.
