The Portales High softball team cut its errors, and got a doubleheader sweep over West Las Vegas, 4-1 and 8-0 Tuesday night.
The Lady Rams (3-2) touched West Las Vegas pitching for two runs in the bottom of the first after junior Jaci Terry got a single, and junior Brittney Gardner and freshman Kelsey Laurenz walked to load the bases for junior Amanda Marquez.
Marquez doubled to make it a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, sophomore Kelly Hook walked and freshman Sorina Flores hit a double to score Hook. Flores scored later on in the inning to give Portales a 4-0 lead.
Portales coach Robbie Crowley said she was pleased with how the girls played.
“We definitely cut down on our errors,” Crowley said. “If you look at the tournament we had (in Clovis), we had error after error after error. We might have had a couple today, I don’t remember, but that is the biggest thing to me because the errors drive me insane.”
The Lady Rams committed two errors and held West Las Vegas to one run on four hits in the opener.
Portales was able to get enough offense despite West Las Vegas coach Lucas Griego’s attempt to keep Portales out of their rhythm by switching pitchers.
“My first pitcher is really slow, so I try to bring one in with a little bit more heat,” Griego said. “By time the other team rotates through their line-up I have a different pitcher in there.”
Griego said his team is practicing and playing hard, but its youth can be an obstacle at times.
Portales got nine hits and scored eight runs in the nightcap, while the Lady Dons were shut out on five hits.
The Lady Rams host Loving in a 4 p.m. doubleheader next Tuesday.
