No. 4 Texico vs. No. 1 Mesilla Valley
What:
Class 2A semifinals
When: 8 a.m. today at The Pit, Albuquerque.
Records: Texico 27-3, Mesilla Valley 27-2.
How they got here: Texico defeated No. 5 Bosque 47-43. Mesilla Valley knocked off No. 8 Navajo Pine 79-46 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.
At stake: A berth in Saturday’s 8:30 a.m. championship game at The Pit. The winner gets either No. 2 Santa Rosa or No. 3 Mesa Vista, who play at 1:30 p.m.
Mesilla Valley players to watch: Zach Adams, 6-0 Sr. guard; Cody Correa, 6-1 Jr. G; Greg Patti, 5-6 Jr. G.
Notes: This is a rematch of last year’s title game, won by the Wolverines 58-55 with a perfect 20-for-20 outing from the free throw line. … Las Cruces-based Mesilla Valley won its first 10 games this season, then lost two of three and now brings a 16-game winning streak into the fray. … The Wolverines hope to use their inside advantage in the game, while the SonBlazers rely heavily on 3-point shooting. “We’ve got to make them run their offense and work for shots,” Texico coach Richard Luscombe said. “Hopefully, that’ll give us an opportunity to get some turnovers.”
Quotable: “Our kids have been pretty loose. I told our kids, ‘We don’t have anything to lose in this game.” — Luscombe, a reference to the fact that Mesilla Valley is the top seed and was expected to get to this point.
