FRENSHIP, Texas — Clovis High’s girls opened the season with a fourth-place finish in the Class 5A Division of Frenship’s season-opening Tiger Relays on Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Wildcats finished with 100 points in the eight-team competition, trailing Lubbock Coronado (167 1/2), Lubbock Monterey (143) and Lubbock High (120).
The Lady Cats had four state-qualifying performances, including two from senior Meagan Baglien — 35 feet, 9 1/2 inches for first place in shot put, and 122-8 for second place in discus.
Other state-qualifying marks were posted by seniors Tara Dewitt, second in the 200 in 26.41 seconds, and senior Lainey Flatow, second in high jump at 5-2.
Flatow also won long jump competition at 16-4, while the Lady Cats’ 800 relay team of Dewitt, Flatow, Janeesha Pleasant and Brionna Blue came in first with a time of 1:48.70.
“We were happy with the way the kids competed,” CHS girls coach Darrel Ray said. “I was impressed with Lainey’s high jump and really impressed with Tara’s 200 time.”
Ray said the 400 relay team had a chance to win, but was disqualified because of a handoff outside the lane.
Clovis boys and girls are in action Friday in the Bulldog Relays at Plainview, Texas.
