Portales @ Goddard
Non-conference game
at 3 p.m. Goddard H.S.
At stake: Season opener.
Last time out: Portales lost 5-1 to eventual runner-up Cobre in the state baseball championships. Goddard lost to Albuquerque Academy 8-2 in the semifinals of the District 3-4A tournament.
Last meeting: Goddard beat Portales 7-0 last season
What to watch for: Portales coach Arturo Ontiveros said he thinks Goddard isn’t as strong this year because they lost their number one pitcher and a catcher. “We are hoping to match up a little better this time around, than last year,” Ontiveros said. We go about every opponent the same way, so we going in doing the things we do well and hope for the best on our part.” Portales has four returning starters from last year and a two players, Andrew Villanueva and Shawn Carrasco playing basketball in the state tournament. Ontiveros said the team is young so they may experiment in certain situations and he’s looking forward to seeing how that goes.
Notes: Portales is currently ranked No. 2 in the state behind Cobre.
