The New Mexico Activities Association has released brackets for the state basketball tournaments in Classes 3-5A, with favorable results for Clovis and Portales squads. Of note:

  • The Clovis girls, winners of 14 consecutive games, are seeded third behind Rio Rancho and Eldorado. They will host West Mesa Friday.
  • The Portales girls are seeded second behind Pojoaque, and will host Hatch Friday.
  • The Portales boys, 18-8 and winners of 10 of their last 11, are seeded third behind Hope Christian and St. Michael's. The Rams host Crownpoint Saturday.
  • The Clovis boys, at 19-9, are seeded fifth, and will host Alamogordo Saturday night. Clovis has won six straight, including Saturday's District 4-5A tournament championship.
  • District 4-5A regular season champion Hobbs is seeded eighth, and will host Eldorado. Hobbs would face the winner of top-seeded Manzano and No. 16 Cibola. According to the seeding committee, a major upset would be required for Clovis and Hobbs to face in the semifinals.
