DUMAS, Texas — The Clovis High softball opened its 2009 season on Tuesday with a 6-1 win over Dumas.

Senior left-hander Adrianna Aguilar pitched a four-hitter for the Lady Wildcats, with one walk and seven strikeouts. Meantime, Clovis collected 14 hits and broke the game open with a three-run fifth.

Shortstop Nicole Anaya scored twice, going 2-for-2 and twice getting hit by pitches. Anaya singled and eventually came around on a passed ball in the first.

After Dumas tied the game in the second, CHS regained the lead in the top of the third when Kayla Merritt led off with a single and courtesy runner Charlotte Varney eventually scored on Jasiman Dykes’ sacrifice fly. Designated player Katie Summers, who went 2-for-3, then singled home a run in the fourth.

In the fifth, Dykes tripled and scoed on a single by Mascarenas. Later in the inning, Vanessa Gallegos hit a two-run single.

“It was a great start,” said Lady Cats coach Brandi Thomas, who started eight seniors against the Lady Demons. “We’re looking forward to a great season.”

Dumas, playing a number of its varsity players, took the junior varsity preliminary 14-0.

Clovis returns to action March 6-7 when it hosts a six-team invitational at Lady Wildcat Complex.
