CARLSBAD — The Clovis High boys basketball team wasted precious little time taking control Tuesday night.

After falling behind 5-0 in the first minute, the Wildcats outscored Carlsbad 19-4 the rest of the quarter and rolled to a 77-47 District 4-5A win over the Cavemen behind 42 points from senior post Jaye Crockett.

Clovis (16-9, 2-1 district) now hosts Hobbs (21-4, 3-0) on Friday night at Rock Staubus Gym, looking for a share of the regular-season 4-5A title. As far as getting the top seed in next week’s district tournament, though, the Cats’ task is a big one — they must win by the maximum 20 points to make up for Hobbs’ 84-62 win at home on Feb. 6.

CHS boys coach J.D. Isler said the Cats aren’t really thinking in those terms.

“We’re not thinking about point spreads,” he said. “We just want to keep playing well. If we do that, I think we’ll be one of the hottest teams around going into the tournament.”

Crockett scored 12 points in the opening stanza, and the Cats never looked back in rolling to their 21st win in a row over the Cavemen (12-14, 0-3) since Isler became the head coach in the 2001-02 season.

“We really played pretty well defensively,” Isler said of the opening quarter. “The kids are playing with the right mentality, and our bench is coming in and helping us.”

It was the third 40-plus game of the season for the 6-foot-7 Crockett. He scored 50 against Los Lunas in a tournament game at Albuquerque in mid-December, and he added 44 in a blowout win over Artesia on Jan. 27 at The Rock.

Senior post Arthur Calbert added 14 points and senior guard Bryan Pierson 10 for the Cats. Clovis, which has often struggled at the free throw line this season, went 16-of-20 on charity tosses in this one.

Carlsbad got 11 points each from senior guard Jared Nicholas and junior post Matt Enloe.
