Boys
What:
Clovis (15-9, 1-1) at Carlsbad (12-13, 0-3) in a District 4-5A game.
When: 7 p.m. today.
Last meeting: The Wildcats defeated Carlsbad 70-55 at Rock Staubus Gym last Tuesday.
Notes: Clovis would clinch at least second place in the three-team district with a win. The Cats need a win tonight and at least a 20-point win over Hobbs here on Friday to have a chance at a regular-season district title. … Carlsbad hung around last week despite subpar games for two of its top players, senior PG Robbey Arrington and junior F Chris Cerny. They combined for 13 points, and both fouled out. … The Cavemen lost 69-57 on Friday at Hobbs. “They’re playing pretty good basketball,” Cats coach J.D. Isler said. “We’ve just got to make sure we go in there and play with the same emotion we did on Thursday (in an 81-48 rout of Roswell High).” … Senior F Arthur Calbert scored 44 points in last week’s two wins, shooting 17-for-25 from the field. “We’re starting to get scoring from other places besides our post (6-foot-7 senior Jaye Crockett),” Isler said. “We have to get some scoring out of Arthur and Bryan Pierson, and even Stefan Mills, too.” … Isler doesn’t expect his team to be looking ahead to Friday’s game. “Not with this team,” he said. “I don’t think we’ll take anything for granted.”
Quotable: “We know it’s not an easy place to play. We’ve got to get off to a good start.” — Isler, on playing at Carlsbad.

Girls
What:
Carlsbad (13-12, 1-2) at Clovis (20-4, 2-0) in a District 4-5A game.
When: 7 p.m. today at The Rock.
Last meeting: The Lady Cats had to come from behind for a 53-44 win last Tuesday in Carlsbad.
Notes: Clovis needs a split this week to clinch the regular-season district title. … The Lady Cats have won 11 in a row and 16 of 17. Meantime, Carlsbad stunned host Hobbs 42-23 on Friday to snap a six-game losing streak. “We don’t want to mess around with Carlsbad,” Lady Cats coach Jeff Reed said. “Carlsbad’s a dangerous team; if we give them hope, they can beat us.” … Clovis has outscored its last three opponents 58-17 in the final quarter, coming from behind in the final period in all three. … Junior P Antiesha Brown scored 16 points and senior G Brittany Johnson added 15 in last week’s win at Carlsbad. Freshman G Taylor Edmundson led the Cavegirls with 10.
Quotable: “We don’t want to get it down to the fourth quarter this time. We want the crowd falling asleep and wondering where they’re going to eat after the game.” — Reed.
