It took some doing, but Clovis High’s girls kept their winning streak alive Friday night.
Junior post Antiesha Brown picked up a foul inside the first 30 seconds, then went to the bench for the half when she got a second one midway through the quarter. Fellow starters Leia Willis and Brittany Johnson had three fouls each early in the second quarter and were banished to the bench until the final period.
With a makeshift lineup on the court much of the time, the Lady Wildcats stayed close through three periods, then ran roughshod over Roswell in the final stanza for a 48-41 victory.
Winners of 11 in a row and 16 of their last 17, the Lady Cats (20-4) dominated the fourth segment with their regulars back in tow. Brown hit all seven of her free throws and scored 11 points in the period, while sophomore Ashlee Pierson was 4-for-4 from the line in the quarter.
“We had a lot of adversity, a lot of foul trouble,” CHS girls coach Jeff Reed said. “The thing I was pleased with was we didn’t quit.”
Brown finished with 20 points and Pierson added 10 for the Lady Cats. Roswell High sophomore guard Shanice Steenholdt also finished with 20 points, including 12 in the first quarter when the Lady Coyotes (18-6) grabbed a 16-11 lead.
With Clovis’ mounting foul problems, the margin grew to 10 twice early in the third period. But Brown quickly made her presence felt, capping her seven-point quarter with a three-point play in the final four seconds to pull Clovis to 35-33.
Brown scored nine points and Pierson added four in a 13-0 run that turned a three-point deficit with less than 4 1/2 minutes left into a 48-38 lead in the final seconds.
“I was well-rested,” Brown quipped of her time on the sideline. “A lot of people stepped up and kept the game close for us.”
The Lady Coyotes hurt themselves with poor free-throw shooting, particularly in the second quarter when they went just 3-of-11 despite building an eight-point halftime lead.
Brown admitted she gets a little anxious when challenged by someone who can match her athleticism, and that can lead to foul problems.
“It gets hard battling people who are just as athletic,” she said. “When they block (your shot), you want to block them back.”
Reed said several people played well in unexpected roles with the starters on the bench.
“Our girls did a good job of defending them inside,” he said. “Tiffany (Nichols) and Natasha (Beachum) really gave us some good minutes.”
The Lady Cats finish the regular season with District 4-5A games on Tuesday against Carlsbad and on Friday at Hobbs.
