Clovis (8-3) at Mayfield (10-2)
When: 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Las Cruces
Radio: KCLV-FM 99.1
Notes: The teams met in the third-place game of the Mel Otero Invite in Rio Rancho on Dec. 13. The Lady Wildcats opened a 22-11 lead in the second quarter with a 15-4 run featuring 3-pointers by Jadee Isler, Amanda Romero and Leia Willis, but the Trojans rallied for a 65-57 win. Senior post Catheryne Chavarria scored 21 points for Mayfield, which is on a five-game winning streak beginning with that game. Meantime, Clovis has won four in a row since that loss. … Both teams won tournament titles earlier this week. Clovis beat Alamogordo 59-44 to win its Plateau Holiday Classic, while Mayfield downed El Paso Burges 50-39 to take the title in a tourney hosted by El Paso Chapin. … Mayfield’s two losses were by a combined four points — 45-42 to Chapin, and 43-42 to La Cueva in the semifinals of the Rio Rancho tourney.
Quotable: “They’re a pretty good team. We played them in the Rio Rancho tournament (but) we just didn’t finish them off.” — Lady Cats coach Jeff Reed.
