It was pick your purple poison for the Santa Fe Demons.
Try to play halfcourt and let Jaye Crockett pound the ball inside, or get into a running game and hope Clovis doesn’t finish plays.
The Demons picked the second, and Clovis finished more than enough plays on offense and defense to cruise to an 86-39 win in the last game of Monday’s Southwest Dairy Farmers Classic.
The Wildcats (6-3), who never trailed and got a game-high 36 from Crockett, put the game away early with a 34-4 run that bridged the first two quarters and held the outmanned Demons to 36 percent shooting on the night.
“They were bigger, faster, stronger,” Demons coach Leonard Roybal said. “I thought we handled their press well, but we shot ourselves in the foot with bad decisions.”
The Demons (4-5), with just one player taller than 6-foot-2, had little incentive to slow the game down against Clovis, with Crockett and Logan Turnbow at 6-foot-7 and 6-foot-4 Arthur Calbert (12 points).
So they ran, and Clovis beat them on that front as well.
“We want to get up and down a little bit,” said senior guard Stefan Mills, who scored three points. “We try to run all night so that ... later on their legs are tired, and we’re still running and gunning.”
Mills was right, as the Demons managed just two points in the fourth to help Clovis make the score even more lopsided. And that’s the type of game that normally pleases eighth-year coach J.D. Isler.
“I think (teams) see our size and they don’t think we run as good as we can,” Isler said. “It doesn’t matter if we’re seven feet. We’re going to run and we’re going to press.”
Isler said the Wildcats got great energy from point guard Dexter Correll, who scored 15 on a series of spot-up 3-pointers — and even a bucket on a botched alley-oop pass to Crockett.
In all, 10 players scored for the Wildcats.
“Of course, Jaye’s going to get his,” Mills said. “We’ve got to have seven to 10 guys scoring every night, and we’ll be a pretty tough team to beat.”
The Wildcats will face Valley (8-3), a 50-44 winner over Abilene Cooper. That game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
“They’re ranked above us in some polls,” Isler said of the Vikings, “so it’s going to be a good test for us tomorrow.”
Ryan Gately led the Demons with 10 points.
