DALLAS — Senior quarterback Wes Wood, who helped lead Muleshoe to its first state football championship on Saturday, was named the Texas Class 2A player of the year on Monday by the Associated Press.
Wood threw for 4,540 yards and 64 touchdowns for the Mules, who capped a 15-0 season with a 48-26 victory over Kirbyville in the finals at Grand Prairie.
It’s the second year in a row Muleshoe has had the 2A player of the year on offense. Wood’s predecessor, Garrett Riley, earned the honor last season when he passed for 2,840 yards and 45 TDs in helping the Mules to a 10-2 record.
Wood, the son of Mules coach David Wood, was a starting receiver and Riley’s backup at QB last year.
Four other Mules players were accorded first-team honors — wide receiver Victor Vasquez, defensive lineman Cooper Washignton and offensive linemen Austin Bambert and Marshal Head. Senior Lane Wood, Muleshoe’s leading rusher with 1,501 yards and 14 touchdowns and the team’s top tackler, was named honorable mention at linebacker.
Lane Wood, Wes Wood’s cousin, was a first-team choice at linebacker in 2007.
