Grady’s Mandy Rush has her eyes set on scoring as she drives on Farwell’s Micky Ceniceros during Friday’s girls semifinal matchup in the Farwell Invitational.

FARWELL — Farwell and Texico will collide tonight for the girls championship in the Farwell Invitational basketball tournament.

The host Lady Blue advanced on Friday night with a 54-42 win over Grady, while Texico earned the other spot with a 25-17 win over Vega.

Grady (3-5) meets Vega for third place at 2:30 p.m. (CST) today, while Texico (5-2) and Farwell (6-6) collide at 5:30 p.m.

It will be the second meeting in just over a week for the Lady Wolverines and Lady Blue. Texico edged Farwell 41-37 on Dec. 5 in the semifinals of Texico’s Citizens Bank Border Shootout.

Grady hung with the Lady Blue much of the way, but Farwell finally broke it open in the fourthy quarter.

Junior guard Tiffani Jones had four 3-pointers and scored 19 points to lead Farwell, while sophomore guard Mandy Rush had three 3s and 19 points for the Lady Bronchos.

Texico avenged one of its losses, a 28-27 setback at Vega on Dec. 2, by winning this time in another low-scoring battle. Freshman Jaylyn Cooper led the Lady Wolverines with nine points, while senior Renae Fangman had six for the Lady Longhorns.

Texico held Vega to five field goals, including no one with more than one.

In the consolation bracket on Friday:

* Friona upended Muleshoe 50-40 in the seventh-place game behind 28 points from junior Staphanie Aguirre. The Lady Mules (9-4) erased an 11-point deficit by outscoring Friona 25-10 in the middle two quarters, but the Squaws dominated the final stanza 22-8.

Muleshoe (9-4) won its first two games in the tournament, but played in the consolation bracket after Thursday’s first round because its football team will compete for the Texas Class 2A Division I state championship today.

Junior Sarah Johnson had 13 points and sophomore Yvonne Gardea 10 for the Lady Mules.

* Muleshoe thumped Melrose 55-34 in a consolation semifinal on Friday morning behind 16 points from Gardea and 15 from senior Morgan Smith. Junior Jordan Beard led the Lady Buffaloes (1-3) with eight.

* Bovina improved to 10-2 with a 49-43 win over Friona behind 24 points from junior Yoselin Rueda. Sophomore Regan Anthony led the Squaws with 10 points.

Bovina and Melrose will play for fifth place at 12:30 p.m. (CST) today.
