FARWELL — Farwell’s basketball teams moved into the semifinals of their own invitational tournament Thursday night with victories over Melrose.

The Farwell boys used a 23-7 second-quarter run to post a 60-53 win over the Buffaloes, while the Lady Blue rode an early 11-0 lead to a 52-33 win over the Lady Buffs.

Farwell’s (4-5) meet Friona in today’s final game, set for 8:30 p.m. (CST). The other semifinal, at 5:30 p.m., sends Texico against Vega.

Farwell’s girls (5-6) take on Friona in a 7 p.m. semifinal today. The earlier semifinal pits Vega against Texico at 4 p.m.

In other boys semifinals:
* Texico pulled away by outscoring Bovina 18-2 in the fourth quarter and the Wolverines cruised to a 71-36 win over the Mustangs. Sophomore Lucas Walthers led three players in double figures for Texico (4-1) with 18 points, while junior guard Jesus Rocha led all scorers with 20 for Bovina (5-5).

* Vega got three 3-pointers and 28 points from senior Trey Galbraith in posteing a 73-29 victory over Grady. The Bronchos (3-4) were led by senior Tanner Allen with 12.

* The Friona Chieftains built a 28-10 first-quarter lead, then limited Amherst to six points the rest of the way in a 69-16 rout. Junior Stetson Reed had three 3-pointers and 21 points for the Chieftains, while junior Trent Fluellen scored 10 points for the Bulldogs.

In other girls semifinals:
* Junior Sarah Johnson scored 17 points and Muleshoe (8-3), leading just 30-27 at halftime, pulled away to a 63-49 victory over Grady. The Lady Bronchos (3-4) were paced by 20 points from sophomore Mandy Rush.

* Texico beat Bovina for the second time in less than a week, handing the Fillies (9-2) a 49-26 setback after beating them in the finals of Texico’s Citizens Bank Border Shootout on Saturday. Junior Victoria Richards topped the Lady Wolverines (4-2) with 10 points, while sophomore Mayra Gomez matched her with 10 points for Bovina.

* Vega opened a 24-9 halftime lead and cruised past Friona 46-29 behind 18 points from senior Teysha Matthews. Senior Heather Sandoval scored eight points for the Squaws.
