WOLFFORTH, Texas — Muleshoe’s football team advanced — emphatically — into Texas’ Class 2A Division I semifinals on Friday night.

Senior quarterback Wes Wood threw for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns — three to senior Victor Vasquez — and the Mules dominated from start to finish in dismantling Clyde 42-7 at Frenship High School.

The victory sends the Mules (13-0), ranked fourth in 2A, into a semifinal matchup next week against either Winnsboro or Pilot Point, who face off this afternoon in Royce City. Next week’s game will be played at one of four locations — Brownwood, Sweetwater, Abilene or Wichita Falls.

Muleshoe finished with 522 yards while its defense forced seven turnovers — four interceptions and three fumbles. Senior running back Lane Wood added 77 yards and a pair of scores for the Mules.

Coach David Wood said the Mules got Clyde out of its preferred ground-oriented style. In fact, the Bulldogs threw more passes (45) than did Muleshoe (38).

“Our defense took them out of their game plan and forced them to go to the air,” David Wood said. “Our defense played great and our offense was clicking on all cylinders.”

Wes Wood finished 24-for-35 for 391 yards, with two interceptions. He’s now thrown 60 touchdown passes for the season.

He fired scoring tosses of 4 and 8 yards to Vasquez in the first quarter, then completed a 27-yarder to Vasquez early in the final period to finish the scoring.

Vasquez finished with five catches for 115 yards, while senior Ray Ramirez caught six for 76 and also had two of Muleshoe’s interceptions against Bulldogs QB Jacob Gonzales.

Wes Wood’s other TD pass was a 36-yarder to Ramirez midway through the second period, staking the Mules to a 28-0 halftime lead. Lane Wood’s scoring runs covered 7 yards in the second quarter and 2 yards in the third.

It’s the second time under David Wood that the Mules have reached the semifinal round of the playoffs. They did it in 2000 while competing in Class 3A.

Clyde came into the game allowing nine points and less than 200 yards per contest this season, including just over 1,000 passing yards. Colby Smith’s 1-yard run midway through the third quarter prevented the Mules from a shutout.
