Muleshoe vs. Littlefield
When:
6:30 p.m. (CST) today in a Texas Class 2A Division I area round playoff game at Frenship High School in Wolfforth.
Records: Muleshoe 11-0, Littlefield 11-0.
Last meeting: 2007, Littlefield beat the Mules 28-21 in overtime in a first-round Class 2A playoff game at Plainview. In fact, the Wildcats have eliminated Muleshoe in the first round in each of the past two seasons.
Last week: Both teams won battles of unbeatens. The Mules beat Bushland 34-20 at Canyon, while Littlefield posted a 20-14 victory over Kermit at Monahans.
Keys to the game: The Mules send their high-powered air attack against the Wildcats’ punishing ground game. “They’re going to play that power football and say, ‘Stop us if you can,’” Mules coach David Wood said.
Of note: The teams were one-time district rivals in Class 3A. … Top players for Littlefield are senior QB Fernando Barrio, sophomore TB Patric Barrio and senior TD/DE Steven Hobractschk, who also handles all of the team’s kicking duties. … Muleshoe has seven games of more than 50 points this season, and two others of more than 40. … Littlefield was held to a season scoring low last week. Prior to that, the Wildcats scored between 24 and 38 points in every game. … The winner advances to a quarterfinal game next week against either Tuscola Jim Ned (7-4) or Clyde (10-1), who play tonight in San Angelo.
Quotable: “It’s the biggest game we’ve played. They know us and we know them.” — Wood.
