FORT SUMNER — The top-seeded Fort Sumner Vixens got a bit of a tussle from second-seeded Floyd before subduing the Lady Broncos 26-24, 25-15, 25-21 in the District 3-1A volleyball tournament championship.

Fort Sumner (19-1), ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, overcame a 17-11 first-game deficit and scored the final four points of the game — the first three on kills by Bree Lucero, followed by a Racheal Chavez ace on game point.

After leading the entire second game, Fort Sumner saw a 16-9 lead evaporate into a 21-20 deficit in Game 3. Lucero’s kill then started a match-ending 5-0 run, with Chavez finishing it with an ace on match point.

Chavez had 11 kills, 11 digs and three aces for the Vixens. Floyd (10-9) was paced by five kills and threeblocks from Tori Tucker.

Both teams will play next week in a round-of-16 state match, likely either Friday or Saturday, with Fort Sumner hosting District 4-1A runnerup Grady and Floyd playing at District 4-1A champion Clovis Christian.
