LAS CRUCES — Facing a struggling opponent, the Clovis High volleyball team got off to a slow start Saturday, then righted itself for a 25-20, 25-15, 25-21 victory over Onate.

Senior Lainey Flatow had 16 kills, two blocks and three digs for the Lady Wildcats (11-5).

Clovis quickly caught the Knights en route to the first-game win. The Lady Cats dominated the second game, then pulled away from an 18-18 tie late in the third to nail down the win.

“It was a long trip,” CHS coach Darrel Ray said. “They’re (Onate) down a little bit, but our kids played at a really high level.

“Sometimes when you have a team that’s a little weaker than us, we play down to them, but today we didn’t do that. We’re happy with the way our kids played.”

Ray said his team passed and defended well against the Knights.

“We were really happy with our serve-receive today,” he said. “It was probably the best it’s been all year, and our defense behind the blocks was good.”

Freshman Felicia Aguilar led the Lady Cats on defense with 20 digs.

The Lady Cats have four matches left in the regular season, three at home. They visit Carlsbad on Tuesday, then host Portales in non-district play on Thursday.
