PLAINVIEW, Texas — Running a bit shorthanded, Clovis High’s cross country teams finished second (girls) and fourth (boys) in the Plainview Invitational on Saturday.

The girls were without their top two runners, senior Caitlin Waters (strep throat) and junior Tara DeWitt (hamstrong). Odessa Permian took the title in a field of only three full teams with a perect score of 15, followed by the Lady Wildcats (68) and Plainview (71).

Junior Anica Chairez led the Lady Cats, finishing 13th in 13 minutes, 41.71 seconds over two miles.

The boys, running with a minimum of five due to illness, got a fifth-place finish from senior Justin Netcher (16:22.20) and a seventh from senior Justin Kyle (16:29.27) in a three-mile competition. Canyon High won the five-team competition at 37, while the Wildcats came in with 76 team points.

Coach Mike Hankins said the meet was not as big as last year’s Plainview Invite.

“I thought we ran well,” he said. “Comparing today’s times to last year’s (at this meet), we were all improving on it, and that’s what we’re looking for.”

CHS squads return to action on Saturday in the Albuquerque High Invitational, set for a 9 a.m. start.
