Clovis Christian 24, Springer 12
Records: Clovis Christian 1-1, Springer 0-2.
Turning point: Clovis Christian stopped Springer four times from the 1-yard line in the final minute of what turned out to be a scoreless first half. “That was the momentum changer,” CCS coach Jason Swann said. “It was huge.”
The difference-makers: Freshman QB Kevin Naceanceno rushed for 145 yards and three TDs for the Eagles. Springer QB Jesus Urquijo ran for two scores.
Stepping up: Sophomore Bret Burrus gained 88 yards on 16 carries in place of starter Shane Mitchell, who just played defense because he was “feeling under the weather.” The lighter load helped Mitchell have a big game at linebacker, Swann said.
Size matters: Swann said he and his staff decided at halftime to simply run the ball right at the smaller Red Devils. The Eagles scored on their first three possessions of the third quarter.
By the numbers: Clovis Christian has outscored its first two opponents 36-12 in the second half.
