ROSWELL — With senior Tara Johnson the only player on either side in double figures, the Portales Lady Rams squeaked out a tough 26-25 road win against Roswell High Thursday night. Portales jumped on Roswell early and went up 14-9 in the first quarter before the Lady Coyotes switched to a zone to take advantage of their size. After that Portales’ attempts to penetrate came up cold with only four points scored over the next two quarters. “Early, we ran a full court press and got a few easy baskets,” Portales coach Clay Stout said. “They switched to the zone and that killed us. They were huge and that gave us a lot of trouble.” Johnson, who ended the game with 16 points, got part of that total from the perimeter early in the game, but was shut down until late in the contest by the stingy Roswell defense. “We were eventually able to get the ball inside the zone to her at the end there,” Stout said. Senior Bethany Self scored five points in the contest while teammate Dallas Russell scored a single 3-pointer. Jenna Wagner rounded out the Portales offense with two points. The 11-4 Roswell Lady Coyotes were led in scoring by senior Desaray Barraza with nine points. Portales hosts Goddard on Saturday.
