Clovis guard Jaden Isler is fouled by Goddard’s Brandon Jones in the third quarter of Saturday night’s game at Rock Staubus Gym.
For a team that relies on 3-point shooting, the Clovis Wildcats didn’t hit a lot of 3-pointers. No matter, as a furious press fueled a 13-0 opening burst and host Clovis never looked back Saturday in a 96-65 victory over Goddard. Senior guard Jaden Isler led the Wildcats (6-0) with 27 points, and was a microcosm of the team’s night. Four nights after tying a school record with nine 3-pointers, Isler hit only one trey, but still managed to pile up the points. As did Clovis, which only hit four 3-pointers but posted 42 points in the paint and got 26 from junior post Jaye Crockett. “When we aren’t making 3s, the posts have to carry us, and I think they stepped up tonight,” Isler said. That was the game plan, Clovis coach J.D. Isler said. “We really looked to our posts inside,” Coach Isler said, “and I think our guards made some really nice passes.” Couple the Cats’ post play with too many turnovers, and the Rockets (6-5) were simply overmatched. “Their press hurt us a little bit,” Goddard coach Kevin Jones said, “and their strength on the inside hurt us a little bit. “They’re just better than us. That’s the bottom line.” Michael Nelson and Justin Cooper scored 17 each to lead the Rockets, who play at Deming on Saturday. Coach Isler thought the Rockets were a good measuring stick, despite spotting Clovis the early lead and allowing 61 points in the second half. “They’re a good team,” Isler said. “I think they’ll have a great opportunity to win their district. They missed some shots in the first half that could have made it a really tight game.” Clovis’ other treys came from Bryce Hill (two en route to a 20-point night) and Layne Strebeck (11 points), who Jaden Isler credited with the team’s perfect start. “Layne’s held our team together with rebounding and defense,” Jaden Isler said. “That doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, but that’s probably the biggest reason we’re winning.” The Wildcats face Santa Fe High Thursday (7:30 p.m.) in their opening game of the Milk Cow Classic tournament.
