Former Clovis High standout Chad Roanhaus was offered the job as head football coach at New Mexico Highlands University on Thursday, according to the school’s sports information director. Highlands SID Gavino Archuleta declined to comment on whether Roanhaus accepted the job at the Division II school in Las Vegas, N.M. He said the school has scheduled a press conference for noon Monday to introduce the new head coach. Roanhaus, who led Las Vegas Robertson to two Class 3A state titles in five seasons, played quarterback at Highlands from 1995-98. He was among three finalists for the job, Archuleta said. NMHU fired Pablo Cano in November after a 4-6 record in his only season. The Cowboys were 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Cano was fired amid allegations of possible NCAA rules violations by the program for using ineligible players in 2006, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican. He was the assistant head coach and head recruiter under Carl Ferrill that season. If he accepts the job, Roanhaus will become the Cowboys’ seventh head coach since 2000. In that time, Highlands has compiled an overall record of 21-63, with only one winning season — a 6-5 mark in 2006 under Ferrill. Roanhaus was a part of one of the more successful spans for NMHU football, which also came under Ferrill from 1996-98. Highlands went 24-9 and twice finished second in the RMAC, and Roanhaus was the starting quarterback during most of that time. He became a Highlands graduate assistant in 1999, when the Cowboys went 7-4 and won the conference title, before becoming a junior varsity coach at Clovis under his dad, Eric, in 2000. Chad Roanhaus also played on a state championship team at Clovis, in 1991, and for a state runner-up in 1993. Chad Roanhaus is 42-21 in five seasons at Robertson and led the program to two consecutive Class 3A state championships in 2005 and 2006.
