FARWELL — Texico and Farwell will renew their rivalry in boys and girls basketball tonight in the semifinals of the Security State Bank Invitational. Texico’s boys opened their season with a 58-30 rout of Morton on Thursday while Farwell subdued Melrose 58-40 in quarterfinal action. On the girls’ side, Texico got past Morton 31-24 and Farwell defeated Melrose 44-27. In the other half of the bracket, Friona and Vega advanced to boys and girls championship semifinals. Friona beat Grady 90-44 and Vega won over Bovina 71-37 in boys’ clashes, while Friona edged Grady 41-37 and Vega knocked off Bovina 70-27 on the girls side. Dalton Cockerham, a 6-foot-2 senior, poured in 17 points as Farwell’s boys (3-7) raced to a 14-point halftime lead. Senior Kevin Park had three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points for the Buffaloes (1-1). Texico, coming off a loss in the Class 2A state football championship six days earlier, made a smooth transition to basketball as sophomore Seth Bailey pumped in five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points. Texico’s defense, meantime, held the Indians (2-6) to two points each in the first and third quarters. Senior Antione Garrett was the whole show for Morton, finishing with 26 of his team’s points. Farwell’s girls (8-3) and Melrose played close into the second quarter before the Lady Blue began to pull away. Sophomores Tiffani Jones and Laura Martinez scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, as Farwell extended its winning streak to five. The Lady Buffaloes (1-1) got nine points from senior TaNeil Roberts. Friona boys 90, Grady 44 — Already leading by 22 points, the Chieftains outscored the Bronchos 34-8 in the fourth quarter. Five players scored in double figures for Friona, led by senior Sawyer Reed with 19 points. Grady senior Brian Blackburn took game honors, finishing with 24 points. Vega boys 71, Bovina 37 — Senior guard Wade Meyer led four Longhorns in double figures, collecting a trio of 3-pointers en route to 19 points. Junior Jesus Rocha scored 20 points and junior Oscar Rodriguez added 10 for Bovina (2-6). Friona girls 41, Grady 37 — The Squaws outscored the Lady Bronchos 11-7 in the final period to pull out a win in the closest game of the day. Senior Hollis Gurley was Friona’s lone double-figure scorer, finishing with 11 points, while senior Katarina Grau and sophomore Molly Rush tossed in 11 each for the Lady Bronchos (4-3). Vega girls 70, Bovina 27 — The Lady Longhorns rolled to a 23-6 lead at the quarter and stayed in complete control against the Fillies (1-6). The balanced Vega attack — five in double figures — was led by junior Teysha Matthews with 13 points. Seniors Ruby Vela and Haylee Hughes had six points each for Bovina.
