The Dora boys and girls swept visiting San Jon Tuesday night at Dora, with both teams earning convincing victories.
The Coyotes opened their season at home Tuesday night with a dominating performance over San Jon 85-22, while the girls beat San Jon 60-28.
“We just got out to a quick start,” Dora boys head coach Ty Thatcher said. “The kids were really focused for the first game of the year and the intensity was up.”
The Coyotes found themselves up 36-2 after the first period. They extended that lead to 63-7 at the half, before outscoring San Jon 16-6 in the third period.
Wesley Skelley led all scorers with 24 points, followed by fellow seniors Hector Fierro’s 21 points and Sadler Hair’s 17 points.
“(San Jon is) a real young team and they turned the ball over a lot,” Thatcher said.
The Dora girls (3-2) led after the first quarter 17-10 before expanding their lead at the half 36-13. The Lady Coyotes led after three quarters 45-20 on their way to a 60-28 win.
“Our offense went real well tonight,” Dora girls head coach Malaqui Webster said. “(We) finally are getting things executed. Defensively we finally came alive. Our man-to-man defense was kind of off a little bit in the first few games we played and tonight it started to click. They played real well.”
Freshman Kelli Merrick led all scorers with 18 points followed by junior Tearney O’Connor with 14 points. Sophomore Tori Varnell added 9 points while junior Kendra Merrick contributed 8 points.
The Dora boys and girls travel to Clayton Thursday for the Clayton Orange and Black tournament.
The Floyd Lady Broncos ran their record to 2-1 Tuesday at home with a 61-35 victory against Tatum.
The Floyd girls jumped out to a big first quarter lead of 21-8. The Lady Broncos outscored the Lady Coyotes in the second quarter 15-12 to take a halftime 36-20 advantage. Floyd also led after three quarters 53-26.
