AMARILLO — Senior quarterback Garrett Riley continued his strong season Friday, throwing for 252 yards and five touchdowns Friday to lead Muleshoe to a 56-14 rout of Sanford Fritch in a Class 2A Division I bi-district playoff game at Dick Bivins Stadium. Riley, who completed 16-of-24 passes, has now thrown 42 touchdown passes for the season. All of his scoring passes against the Eagles (5-6) came in the first half, which ended with Muleshoe leading 42-7. The Mules (10-1) advanced to an area round game next weekend against Littlefield, probably at either Plainview or Lubbock at a time to be determined. Littlefield, which ousted Muleshoe in the first round last season, beat Denver City 35-6 Thursday night. Muleshoe took advantage of three Sanford-Fritch fumbles on kickoffs to set up relatively short scoring drives in the first half. Three of Riley’s TD strikes were to Elias Alvarado, a 21-yarder in the first half and passes of 3 and 2 yards within a minute of each other late in the second stanza, the latter set up by a fumbled kickoff. The Eagles bobbled Muleshoe’s pooch kickoff again, and Riley threw his third scoring pass in less than two minutes when he hit Ray Ramirez from 10 yards out. Nine players had at least one reception for the Mules, led by Alvarado with four catches for 28 yards and Dusty Clayton with three for 75. Clayton had a 44-yard TD catch in the first quarter. Muleshoe’s other scores came on runs of 22 yards by Lane Wood in the first quarter, 15 yards by Victor Vasquez in the third and 13 yards by Jared Mendoza in the fourth. The Mules finished with a 25-15 edge in first downs and a 457-242 margin in total yardage. Foxes rout Bobcats — Two-time defending Class 1A champion Fort Sumner proved its season-opening 54-12 win at Hagerman was no fluke by blasting the Bobcats by the same score on Friday night in a Class 1A semifinal game at Hagerman. Senior Cass Dimitroff carried 15 times for 188 yards and scored on runs of 52, 49 and 36 yards in the third quarter to help the Foxes (11-1) put the game completely out of reach. Fort Sumner doubled up the Bobcats in total offense 478-239. The Foxes will play either district rival Clayton or Carrizozo next weekend for the championship. Those teams meet this afternoon in Carrizozo.
