Clovis looks to continue its recent domination in District 4-5A play tonight against Carlsbad. The Wildcats have won 13 straight district games and 20 of their last 21. Clovis (6-3, 1-0) can win its fifth straight district title by beating the visiting Cavemen. Clovis assistant coach Darren Kelley said the game is also important for state-playoff seedings. “We’ve got to take care of business,” Kelley said. “We can’t afford to give (the selection committee) a reason not to seed us where we need to be.” The top four seeds in the 12-man Class 5A playoffs receive first-round byes. The Wildcats were ranked fourth in this week’s Albuquerque Journal Coaches’ poll. The Cavemen (3-6, 0-1) haven’t been officially eliminated from the district race. Because of tie-breaker rules, Carlsbad has to beat Clovis by at least 13 points to force a three-way tie in the three-team district that also includes Hobbs. Kelley said the Wildcats are looking for more consistency on offense. “We’ve got to do a better job of blocking up front and taking care of our responsibilities,” Kelley said. “We’re not doing a good job of getting to the second level.” Kelley said the Cavemen are a good defensive football team. “They stunt from every angle, every down and in every gap,” Kelley said. “It’s a feast or famine defense.” Carlsbad is coached by former Eastern New Mexico University linebacker Ron Arrington. The Cavemen have had two weeks to prepare for Clovis, but Arrington said he hasn’t changed much. “It comes down to execution,” said Arrington, who was named head coach this year after 10 years as an assistant at the school. “We need to be able to execute down after down.” Playoff seedings will be announced Sunday.
