MULESHOE 42, BUSHLAND 17 Impact: The Mules, who last week clinched a playoff berth, wrapped up the District 2-2A title by handing the Falcons their first loss of the season. Muleshoe can claim the outright district title next week by beating Friona at home, but even if it loses it wold have the tiebreaker over Bushland. Records: Muleshoe 8-1 (5-0), Bushland 9-1 (5-1). Difference-makers: Senior quarterback Garrett Riley completed 17-of-28 passes for 202 yards and three TDs. Elias Alvarado caught one of the TD passes and ran for another score, while Wes Wood caught a TD pass from Riley and later threw one to Austin Wright. Go figure: 9 — players with at least one catch in the game for Muleshoe. FORT SUMNER 49, CLAYTON 9 Impact: The Foxes moved on in their pursuit of a third consecutive Class 1A title, wrapping up the District 2-1A crown. Records: Fort Sumner 8-1 (2-0), Clayton 6-4 (1-1). Difference-makers: Senior RB Cass Dimitroff, playing for the first time in five weeks, carried 14 times for 157 yards and scored second-quarter TDs on runs of 6, 5 and 12 yards, helping Fort Sumner open a 34-9 halftime lead. Junior QB Berry Stinnett ran for a score and threw TD passes covering 64 yards to Anthony Griffin and 12 yards to Jacob West. Noteworthy: Neither team scored in the final 17 1/2 minutes. MELROSE 72, LOGAN 0 Impact: The Buffaloes wrapped up the 8-man District 4 title with a surprisingly easy road win. Records: Melrose 7-3 (3-0), Logan 5-5 (1-2). Difference-makers: Sophomore QB Clint Barnard ran for four TDs and threw a 72-yard scoring pass to Ramon Arenivar. Junior RB Call Barnard, Clint’s brother, and senior RB Adam Hairgrove each ran for a pair of TDs for the Buffs. Of note: Melrose struck for the game’s first 22 points in a four-minute span in the middle of the first quarter, capped by Lane Draper’s 99-yard interception return for a score. Quotable: “I’m proud of the way the kids played. They deserve the district championship. Once we got everybody healthy, we really started to peak.” — Melrose coach Dickie Roybal, whose team has won six in a row. FLOYD 42, CLOVIS CHRISTIAN 20 Impact: The Broncos, who won only one game in 2006, clinched the second playoff berth from 8-man District 4 behind Melrose. Records: Floyd 6-4 (2-1), Clovis Christian 0-10 (0-3). Difference-makers: Sophomore QB Jesus Davalos ran for three touchdowns and threw for another — all in the first half. He finished with 210 yards rushing on 26 carries and completed 5-of-13 passes for 65 yards. For CCS, sophomore QB Shane Mitchell carried 19 times for 107 yards and a touchdown and threw for 67 yards and another score. BOVINA 42, FARWELL 6 Impact: The Mustangs remained tied with Springlake-Earth, which whipped Sudan 33-16, for second place in District 4-1A behind Nazareth. Bovina hosts Springlake-Earth in the regular-season finale on Friday. Records: Bovina 4-5 (3-1), Farwell 1-8 (1-3). Difference-makers: Bovina’s Mauricio Garcia led a 340-yard ground attack for the Mustangs with 231 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Trent Quintana ran for one touchdown and threw for another.
