HOBBS — Junior Caitlin Waters bounced back from a bit of an off-day Saturday in the New Mexico Military Invitational in Roswell to capture first place on Thursday in the Hobbs Invitational cross country meet. Waters covered the three-mile course in 19 minutes, 52 seconds, helping the Lady Wildcats to a fourth-place team finish. Odessa “A” took the team title, followed by Hobbs and Odessa “B.” Clovis’ boys finished third, trailing Hobbs and Odessa. Waters struggled to a sixth-place finish at NMMI in a time of 21:04. “I was real proud of Caitlin,” CHS coach Mark Bussen said. “It was windy, so the times weren’t great, but she ran a great race.” For the boys, junior Justin Netcher took fifth place in a time of 17:10. Bussen said he was glad to see the Wildcats close the gap on District 4-5A rival Hobbs, although the Eagles dominated them a bit late. “I got on the guys because they pulled away from us in that last mile, and that shouldn’t have happened,” Bussen said. He added that the boys have a chance to make a move in the district meet, scheduled for Nov. 2 in Hobbs. “I think the district’s still up in the air,” he said. “We’re certainly not the favorites, but I don’t have any doubt that we can be in the hunt.” Clovis teams wrap up their regular season next Thursday in an invitational at Ruidoso.
