ROSWELL — The Portales Rams went into Friday night’s game against Goddard planning to slow down the Rockets’ ground game.
Instead, Goddard collected almost 300 yards of total offense, including four rushing touchdowns in the first half, and shut out the Rams 35-0 at the Wool Bowl.
“We didn’t (contain) them very well in the first half,” Rams defensive coordinator Mark McAfee said.
“Early on, we just weren’t taking care of our responsibilities,” PHS coach Andy Correll said. “Our kids’ intensity was better in the second half."
Junior running back Ruben Coronado scored two touchdowns and rushed the ball 10 times for 82 yards for the Rockets (4-1).
The Rams (0-5) were held to just eight total first downs, five of which came on Portales’ final drive.
“At times we were moving the ball, but most of the time we sputtered,” Correll said. “Our blocking really wasn’t where we needed it to be tonight.”
The Rockets opened the scoring with a Chase Kiser 7-yard run midway through the first quarter. Goddard followed that up with a Coronado 15-yard scamper for a 14-0 lead.
Coronado scored again from 5 yards out in the second quarter, and quarterback David Vega’s 7-yard run gave Goddard a 28-0 halftime advantage.
Sophomore running back Greg Ramirez added a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to complete the scoring.
“We played a lot better in the second half than in the first,” McAfee said.”We gave (Coronado) the cutbacks that we wanted to take away from him.”
The Rams (0-5) travel to Tucumcari Friday night.
“Right now, we’ve got to go back and get ready for Tucumcari,” Correll said.
