Coming off its first loss of the season, Muleshoe will try to start a new winning streak tonight when the Mules begin District 2-2A play against winless River Road in Amarillo. While the Mules have to move on from their 21-14 loss at Idalou last week, Muleshoe coach David Wood said it’s never easy. “We probably won’t get it out of our system,” he said. “It’s hard to get (losses) out of your system.” Two turnovers — an interception returned for an Idalou touchdown in the third quarter and a fumble near the goalline late in the game — spelled doom for Muleshoe against the Wildcats. The Mules (3-1) figure to be a solid favorite against River Road (0-4), which is coming off a 55-14 loss to Sanford-Fritch. The Mules’ hope not to slip up early in district play, with tougher games expected to come late in the season against Bushland and Friona. “We’re just trying to stay focused,” senior two-way tackle Cesar Lopez said. “We just have to treat every game like it’s (equally) important, because it is now.” Lopez said the Mules were disappointed to lose last week, but he said the game was good for them. “All week in practice coach told us it was going to be a four-quarter game,” he said. “If we want to go deep in the playoffs, playing a game like that puts it in perspective for us. “We want to take each game one at a time and just get better each week.” This week’s challenge is to take care of a game they’re supposed to win, something Wood said his teams have been able to do consistently over the years. River Road has been struggling, but Wood expects the Wildcats to keep the ball in the air most of the night with quarterback C.J. Arney. “We have to force him to throw balls he’s not ready to throw,” Wood said. “We’re on the right track this week. We definitely earned a lot from out loss, but this is a game where we’re supposed to win.” AREA SCHEDULE All Times MDT Today * Texico at Hagerman, 7 p.m. * Cloudcroft at Fort Sumner, 7 p.m. * Magdalena at Clovis Christian, 7 p.m. * Farwell at Sundown, 6:30 p.m. * Bovina at Wellington, 6:30 p.m. * Muleshoe at Amarillo River Road, 6:30 p.m. Saturday * Melrose at Menaul, 1:30 p.m.
