Rattlers dominate Bears 39-6 at home

The Tucumcari Rattlers won big, 39-6, at their first home game against the Estancia Bears.
On offense Rattlers senior Andrez Apodaca had two touchdown passes, both caught by senior Michael Fazekas. Sophomore Lucas Benavidez had two rushing touchdowns and senior Andre DeBord had two rushing touchdowns.
"We are 2-1 and I am very proud of that," said Rattlers coach Dub Smith. "The kids are working harder to improve each week. Our coaching staff has done an outstanding job with these young men. I feel that we have the best coaching staff in all of 2A football."
The Rattlers defense limited the Bears offense to only nine first downs throughout the game — six in the first half and only three in the second half. The Rattlers often shut down the offensive drive of the Bears on fourth and one stopping the run or putting pressure on the Bears quarterback junior John Jaquez. Fazekas had the only interception in the game and he ran it back 34 yards for a touchdown.
"When the quarterback goes back to pass, he looks downfield to where he is going to throw it. I just moved under the pass to make a play on the ball," said Fazekas. "Once I caught it, I just started running and kept working until I heard the whistle blow."
The Rattlers' weak point in the game was penalties. They had a total of 15 penalties for 110 yards.
"We played well tonight. We just need to keep working and get better week after week," said Rattlers defensive coach John Span. "We had a few breakdowns in the game but we will work on them to improve."
