Senior Derrick Phillips rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown in Clovis' 33-0 win.
Senior nose guard Daniel Segovia brings down Palo Duro's Julian Watson during the first first quarter of Friday's games.
Senior Manuel Robles rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns.
Defensive coordinator Darren Kelley walked in the Clovis locker room holding a sign over his head that read, “There’s nothing tougher than a Clovis Wildcat.
The sign had hung over the entrance of the Wildcats’ locker room until recently. Kelley said it will be cemented on the wall once again after the Wildcats beat Palo Duro 33-0 at Leon Williams Stadium.
Clovis (2-1) recorded four sacks and picked off two passes while recording its first shutout of the season.
Palo Duro (1-2) crossed midfield twice in the game — once when it recovered a fumble at the Wildcat 37 – and finished with 124 yards.
“They played hard,” Kelley said of his defense. “That’s what Friday nights at Clovis are supposed to be like.”
Derrick Phillips rushed for a career-high 135 yards and a touchdown and Manuel Robles added 122 yards and three scores for the Wildcats.
“Every week we’re playing better,” said Phillips, who scored on a 29-yard run in the first quarter. “This week we came out and practiced hard and it paid off.”
The Wildcats’ running game was so dominant they passed the ball only once — a 65-yard catch and run from Jordan Mendoza to Bryce Hill in the second quarter to the Palo Duro 1-yard line. Scott McMath scored on the next play as Clovis took a 20-0 halftime lead.
It didn’t get any better for the Class 4A Dons in the second half.
Robles scored on a pair of short runs in the third quarter — the second set up by Jaden Isler’s fifth interception of the year. Meanwhile, Palo Duro was forced to punt twice after failing to convert on third-and-1.
“They just dominated the line of scrimmage,” Palo Duro coach Steve Parr said. “They played more aggressive than we did.
“There were a few times when we had third-and-short and fourth-and-short and we couldn’t get it done.”
Senior defensive tackle Michael Howard, who made several big stops on third and fourth down, said the team felt they had something to prove.
“We kept hearing we’re not really a Clovis team because we don’t come out and hit people,” Howard said. “We came out and hit people tonight.”
