PLAINVIEW, Texas — Junior Caitlin Waters finished second overall, highlighting the Clovis High girls’ performance Saturday in the Plainview Invitational cross country meet. Waters ran a time of 12 minutes, 47 seconds for two miles. Hereford’s Ashley Mason was the winner in 12:38. “Caitlin ran well,” CHS coach Mark Bussen said. “It’s hard for her to adjust to two miles (from the standard three-mile race in New Mexico), but this time she made a point to get out with the leaders. “That second-place finish is really good for her.” The Lady Wildcats finished eighth out of 11 teams with 192 points. Hereford cruised to the team title, scoring 31 points to 77 for runnerup Odessa. Clovis’ boys placed sixth with 137 points. Hereford also captured that team title, finishing with 36 points to 77 for Amarillo Tascosa. Junior Justin Netcher posted a 10th-place finish for the Cats, covering the three-mile course for the boys in 16:40. Teammate Justin Kyle was 15th with a time of 16:48. Bussen said the boys ran better than they did a week earlier in the Clovis Invitational at Ned Houk Park. “I was really happy with the kids,” he said. “The schedule was kind of crazy (with an 8 a.m. MDT start for the junior varsity races), but they handled it well.” Hereford’s Tony Fergueno was the boys’ individual champion with a time of 15:46. Clovis returns to action on Saturday in the Albuquerque High Invitational.
