The Tucumcari Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has a program where they give out new United States Flags for torn or faded flags. The Tucumcari Chapter members drive around town and jot down places that fly the United States flag and see if that flag needs replacing. Then the flag chairwoman takes a new flag, the size depending on the height of the flagpole, and trades them a new flag for the worn and tattered flag.
The only reason the Tucumcari Chapter can afford to do this is by the generosity of the Tucumcari Elks Lodge 1172. The lodge recently donated another $500 for the Daughters of the American Revolution to purchase more flags to trade. In the past two years, the Elks have donated a total of $1000.
The flag chairwoman keeps the flags until the Tucumcari Chapter has a flag-burning ceremony.
Recent recipients are Moe Angel for the United States Post Office, Edward Ulibarri, Kori Martin for the Quality Inn, Bill Rouse, Officer Clayton McClure for the City Police Department, Lloyd Ashcraft for the State Highway Department, Raul Garza for Garza Scrap Metals and Debbie Rogers for Suds and Scissors Salon.
