Two area boys basketball teams are headed to Albuquerque Wednesday for state tournament play.

On Wednesday the 2A Tucumcari Rattlers will play at 3 p.m., against Mora at the Santa Ana Star Center.

“We have gotten past the first round and hopefully gotten those first round mistakes out of our system,” said Rattlers head coach John Span.

The Rattlers advanced to the second round of the state tournament after a 63-53 win Saturday night against Navajo Pine’s Warriors.

The Rattlers led the game by double digits throughout. However, small inconsistencies in their gameplay prompted Coach Span’s concern.

Span said turnovers and lost rebounds led to points for the Warriors. He said fouls, which led to starter Dalton Wood having to sit out the last 5 minutes of the game, were a problem.

“We did some things which were uncharacteristic,” Span said. “I guess it’s good to get those little errors out of the way before we move on.”

The 2B San Jon Coyotes are entering the state tournament as the second seed after clinching a 35-30 district championship over Elida.

The Coyotes will play at 11:30 Wednesday against seventh-seed Hondo at Bernalillo High School in Albuquerque.

In 1A action, the Logan Longhorns and Lady Longhorns have a first-round exit in the state tournament.

The 15-seed Lady Longhorns lost 63-42 Friday at Tatum to the second-seed Tatum Lady Coyotes. The Longhorns lost 63-52 to the Menaul Panthers Saturday night at Menaul.
