Bids by Logan and San Jon for the 1A boys and girls ended in the first round of state tournament play.
On Saturday, the Logan Longhorns lost 59-57 to the Des Moines Demons at Logan.
“It was a great game...came down to the last second,” said Longhorns head coach Billy Burns.
Burns said the game was tied with 20 seconds to go and the Demons rebounded the ball and made a lay up. He said that left four seconds left in the game.
“We ran a play had a good shot and just missed it,” Burns said.
Burns said the team played well, they just didn’t finish the game they needed to finish.
The team will lose four seniors Truitt Frost, Blake Strack, Robert Bowling and Josh Ruda.
Losing the game so close makes the team want to win that game next year and go on to play in Albuquerque.
The District 4 champion Longhorns earned the first round home game by defeating the San Jon Coyotes 58 to 51 on Feb. 26.
The Coyotes lost Saturday night to the Springer Red Devils who advanced further in to state play.
The Lady Longhorns lost 81 to 54 on Thursday to the Des Moines Lady Demons.
“They were a little intimidated and missed some easy shots early,” said Lady Longhorns coach Clair Rachor. “That helped them to stretched their lead and eventually put the game out of reach.”
Rachor said Des Moines was a physical team. He said and the girls did not know how to react to the physical play at first and were retaliating instead of playing basketball.
“That first half they really got us,” Rachor said. “We were not taking care of the basketball and missing free throws. We were playing catch up for the rest of the way.”
Despite the loss Rachor said he is excited about next year. He said the team will lose one senior Jessica Aguilera.
“Jessica is an outstanding player and a great leader,” Rachor said.
Rachor said this state tournament experience got the team hungry. He said the team will work a lot this summer.
“Sometimes the ball bounces that way,” Rachor said. “All you can do is learn from it and continue playing.”
The Lady Longhorns road to Des Moines began with a 69-52 loss to the Grady Lady Bronchos on Feb. 27 in the District 4 title game.
The Lady Bronchos defeated the Cimarron (2009 1A state championship) on Friday to advance further into state play.
