Tucumcari, Logan, House and San Jon have had roller coaster years with big victories and hard upsets.
On Friday, Tucumcari, Logan and San Jon will be playing to advance to the postseason. House ended its season 5-4 (0-3 in district play) with a 64-14 loss to Lake Arthur on Friday.
Tucumcari and Logan both lost at home on Friday. Tucumcari fell 26-7 to Texico and Logan was routed 62-6 by Melrose. San Jon won big on the road, 52-6, against Walatowa.
Can’t look back: “I told the guys you cannot dwell on last week’s loss — we need to keep looking forward,” Logan coach Billy Burns said.
Logan’s last chance at a postseason appearance hinges on a victory over Clovis Christian on Friday.
“We are going to concentrate on slowing them down,” Burns said. “They’ve got good speed and they spread the ball around.
“We need to focus on playing football, Friday night, at Clovis Christian. That is what matters now. We take of business there, we advance to the playoffs.”
Just sayin’: “We have to put this behind us. We need to keep working hard and get ready to surprise Santa Rosa come Friday.” — Tucumcari quarterback Alex Hutchins after last week’s loss.
• “We are treating this like a do-or-die situation,” said San Jon Coach Steve Foust. “If we win we continue to play. If we lose we are sitting at home. Foust said winning big last week helped to build his team’s confidence — but it needs to stay focused.
Must improve: Tucumcari and Texico were tied 0-0 after the first quarter on Friday, but the Wolverines scored twice in 18 seconds to start the second period. A Tucumcari fumble on the kickoff led to the second score.
“We are a young team. The guys are stepping up great, but we are beating ourselves out there,” Tucumcari Coach Daniel Hutchins said.
You can look it up: Records going into Friday night’s matchups show Tucumcari is 5-4 (0-2 in district play), Logan is 7-2 (1-1) and San Jon is 4-4 (2-1).
