Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales. Troy J. Thomas, 91, died Friday, July 13, 2007 in Muleshoe, Texas. Mr. Thomas was born Oct. 17, 1915 in Abernathy, Texas, to Reba and William J. Thomas. He grew up in Abernathy and graduated from Abernathy High School. While in school, ran track and played football. He attended classes at Texas Tech. In the late 1930s, he worked for Southern Union Gas Co. in Carlsbad, where he met Norene Yoachum. He and Yoachum were married on March 12, 1940 in Carlsbad. In 1943 they moved to Halfway, Texas, where he farmed. In 1962 they moved to Muleshoe. He actively farmed there until 1996 when his health caused him to retire. As a younger man he had owned race horses, and enjoyed going fishing. In the early 2000s, he moved to Golden Acres in Portales. In September 2006, he moved to the Parkview Nursing Home in Muleshoe. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and while living in Muleshoe had belonged to the church in the Y. L. community near their farm. Mr. Thomas is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Jessie Robinson of Tucumcari and Marilyn (Butch) Gardner of Portales; a very special friend, Billie Goree of Plainview, Texas; three grandchildren, Tamara (Danny) Garcia of Logan, Sharla (Cyle) Sharp of Estancia and Troy (Kim) Gardner of Portales; four great-grandchildren, Jett Sharp, Belynn Sharp, Vince Gardner and Cooper Gardner; a brother, H. S. “Buck” Thomas of East Richardson, Texas; a sister, Millie Smith of Roswell; and three half-sisters, Billie, Delores and Barbara. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his wife, Norene who died Dec. 16, 1991. Cyle Sharp and Pat Boone will officiate at the services. Burial will be in the Portales Cemetery with Danny Garcia, Cyle Sharp, Jett Sharp, Jimmy Goree, Troy Gardner and Henry Carrion serving as pallbearers. All of the nursing staff and his friends from Parkview Nursing Home in Muleshoe, and Bruce Purdy will be honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Parkview Nursing Home, 1100 W. Ave J, Muleshoe, TX 79347. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
