  • Disc golf arrives in city

    Steve Hansen|Aug 30, 2017

Disc golf at Tucumcari’s new disc golf course is like regular golf except that: • You carry a set a backpack or cloth case of throwing discs around instead of long, heavy bag of clubs to hit dimpled little balls. • You dress for a hike in the back country, not in cleats for the fairway. • If you did use a vehicle, not recommended, it would be a four-wheel-drive all-terrain vehicle, not a golf cart. Tucumcari’s 18-hole disc golf course has made a favorable impression on professional disc golfers, and the Tucumcari course will host a state pro...

    Thomas Garcia|Aug 30, 2017

One person is dead, another is detained in what New Mexico State Police officials are calling a homicide investigation Tuesday morning on the 400 block of North College Street in Tucumcari. State police are investigating this incident as a homicide, said Lt. Herbert Hinders. "I was drinking my coffee outside when I heard a gunshot, then I heard a second gun shot and a woman screaming," said Pablo Benavidez, a neighbor. Hinders said NMSP has taken the lead in this investigation and are awaiting...

  • Pastor: Teen was suicidal

    David Stevens|Aug 30, 2017

CLOVIS — The teenage boy accused in the deadly shooting at Clovis’ public library had been in trouble at school, had recently contemplated suicide and had “anxiety attacks” that resulted in his going home from church on Sunday morning, his pastors said. Nathaniel Jouett was arrested without incident after police said he opened fire a little after 4 p.m. Monday in the library, killing two people and injuring four more. Pastors at Clovis’ Living Word Church of God said the shooting stunned them because they thought Jouett was making positive...

CLOVIS - "Run!," he yelled. "Why aren't you running? I'm shooting at you! Run!" Lisa Baird said she was maybe 20 feet from the young man shouting the words as he opened fire in the Clovis-Carver Public Library on Monday afternoon, killing two people and leaving four more injured. Police declined to name the suspect, but said there was only one and he was handcuffed as police led him away from the scene soon after they arrived. Friends identified the teenager photographed in police custody as...

  • Community joins hands in prayer

    Eamon Scarbrough|Aug 30, 2017

CLOVIS — People deal with tragedy in a variety of ways, but for several members of Kingswood United Methodist Church, help from a higher power was needed. After two people were killed and four were injured in a shooting at the Clovis-Carver Public Library Monday afternoon, the congregation gathered that evening to surrender their troubles to God. “There is nothing to be said that makes sense of what has happened. It is hard for us, as human beings, to see the full brokenness of who we are — all of us, every single one of us,” said Pastor...

  • Portales line break far from first

    Eamon Scarbrough|Aug 30, 2017

PORTALES — A break in a water line that left most of Portales without running water for over 12 hours Saturday isn’t the first of its kind, according to city officials. The break, which originated in a 24-inch water line off of Lime Street, was reported at 5 p.m. Saturday and repaired 8 a.m. Sunday, according to City Manager Sammy Standefer. The line has broken roughly five times in the last five years, Standefer said, attributing improper installation to the constant problems. “It did not have any bedding around it. Basically, it rests on ro...

  • Bible shows how to handle theft

    Gordon Runyan|Aug 30, 2017

Here’s a single-question Bible quiz for all the scholars. What is the biblical penalty for theft? If you guessed chopping off a hand, you’re thinking of the wrong religion. So what is it? Prison? Exile? Death? Something else? The answer is “something else.” The penalty for theft according to biblical law is restitution. The texts that teach this are too long to reproduce here, but look at Exodus 22 and Leviticus 6 for starters. This concept means if you stole or damaged your neighbor’s property, you should make it good by repaying his loss....

  • Actually, being green seems easy

    Steve Hansen|Aug 30, 2017

In some recent summers, it seemed that Tucumcari was surrounded by a dome that allowed us to see storms developing all around us but kept the water away from our city. This summer, however, I think we’ve gotten our share. The weeds in my yard have gotten huge, and my half-hearted efforts at yard work have been inadequate to keep up. The parts of the yard I can’t get to with my lawnmower and weed whacker are beginning to look like they could shelter whole herds of deer. On the other hand, cool rains the past week have made the difference bet...

  • Pearce's dollars for 2018 need judge's ruling

    Albuquerque Journal|Aug 30, 2017

We thought a federal court settled it in 1996. Or that the N.M. Secretary of State’s Office did last year. So why is it taking so long to get an answer in 2017? U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, a Republican, has filed a federal lawsuit against New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, a Democrat, over whether Pearce can transfer all of his roughly $1 million federal war chest to his campaign for New Mexico governor. Toulouse Oliver’s office has imposed state campaign contribution limits — $5,500 per contributor for both primary and gener...

  • Hopefully, 71 genders are enough

    Rube Render|Aug 30, 2017

I’m told that it’s possible to select any one of 71 different gender options for use on Facebook. These include asexual, polygender and two-spirit person, whatever that denotes. I don’t know if that’s true, but it’s on the internet so I guess it’s possible. I do know that the Elementary Teachers Foundation of Ontario, held inclusiveness training for their members to familiarize them with the current language of gender and ensure they are sensitive to contemporary gender issues. According to the...

  • Fundraiser shrimp boil called success

    QCS staff|Aug 30, 2017

A weekend fundraising shrimp boil raised more than $8,000 for the Paws and Claws Animal Rescue Group. “The event was a huge success thanks to the generosity and support of the community,” said Kathy McClelland, program director. McClelland said the money raised from ticket sales and a silent auction will help to fund the programs services. She said those services include vet visits, spay and neutering clinics and food and supply cost. McClelland said the main goal for raising money is to build an indoor kennel for the dogs before the win...

    Steve Hansen|Aug 30, 2017

City Manager Jared Langenegger Thursday proposed a city government reorganization plan to the Tucumcari City Commission but did not seek action on the plan. Mostly, he said, he would want to hire an assistant city manager to help him oversee the operations of 18 city departments. “Ideally,” he said, “the span of control for any manager should be no more than five to seven direct reports.” Hiring the assistant, he said would cost the city $97,000 a year in salary and benefits. The salary would be about $66,000 a year, he said. Langene...
