Local entries absorb losses in first round
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ALBUQUERQUE — Portales’ Shelby Lucero and Leandra Montoya were eliminated in a first-round match in girls doubles on Friday in the Class 3A state individual tennis tournament, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Raton’s Ashley Trujillo and Meagan Clark at Jerry Cline Complex.
Lucero and Montoya were Portales’ lone representatives in the event.
“Those (Raton) girls had played together all season and probably even years before,” Lady Rams coach Sara Bulls said. “Shelby and Leandra had only played together during the district tournament.”
In Class 5A, Clovis sent two singles entries and a doubles team and also came away winless for the day.
Sophomore Heather Trujillo dropped a first-round match to Cibola junior Sara Nogan 6-4, 7-5 in girls singles. On the boys’ side, sophomore Andy North lost to junior Andy Krauss of La Cueva 6-4, 6-1 while the freshman doubles team of Nate Carter and Matt Tryan absorbed a 6-0, 6-1 setback from Eldorado seniors Kenton Losinzki and Kevin Wiliams.
