Hutchins signs on to play football at NMMI

A local senior signs a letter of intent to play football for the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos this fall.

Alex Hutchins, a senior at Tucumcari High School was surrounded by his parents, Daniel and Darla Hutchins and members of the coaching staff Wednesday as he signed the letter to attend NMMI in Roswell.

“I am happy about my choice it is a win-win situation,” Hutchins said. “I will have a chance to further my education and play as an outside receiver for their football team.”

“Alex’s is kid with a good upside who can help this team,” said Jeff Lynn, Broncos coach. “We are excited to have Alex join the team.”

Hutchins accepted a $3,000 partial scholarship from NMMI and is receiving $4,000 in additional scholarships from a legislative scholarship.

“The scholarships will cover the cost of the tuition each semester,” Hutchins said.

Hutchins said he chose NMMI for the chance to continue playing football after high school. He said he had been contacted and received offers from West Texas A&M, Eastern New Mexico University and New Mexico Highlands University.

“NMMI is the right fit for me,” Hutchins said.

“I am very excited for him,” said Darla Hutchins, Alex’s mother. “This is what he has wanted since the first day of sixth grade football.”

Hutchins said his choice was also based on the fact that he would be close to home.

“He is going to be a part of a great football program,” said Daniel Hutchins, Alex’s father. “The Lynn brothers (Jeff and Josh) run an great team. Plus he will be close to home so we can go watch him play.”

Several of Alex’s coaches were on hand to watch and support Alex as he made this next step in his life.

“His work ethic is going to be valuable to their team,” said Bryan Dunlap, assistant football coach.

Dunlap said Alex’s football IQ, his understanding of the game and his athletic ability will make it fun to watch him play.

“Alex’s is a three sport athlete in Tucumcari,” Jeff Lynn said. “I think once he settles down and commits to playing one sport we will really see him take off.”
