San Jon starts season with mixed results

Receipts requested

Tucumcari Middle School requests residents save cash register receipts from Lowe’s food store. Each receipt collected between Sept. 1 and March 31, 2007 is eligible to help the school earn free educational equipment. Stored receipts might able to give the school an extra boost.

Bring Lowe's receipts, marked attention to the Middle School PTO, by the school at 914 S. 5th St., or mail them to: Tucumcari Middle School PTO, 914 S. 5th Street, Tucumcari, NM 88401.

Police lining I-40

On Wednesday, during the afternoon and evening hours, the New Mexico State Police and Motor Transportation Division will be conducting a “One in Ten” project, the police announced Friday in a press release. Officers from these law enforcement agencies will be stationed every 10 miles along Interstate 140 across New Mexico.

Officers will target hazardous moving violations, such as speeding, following too close, unsafe lane changes, DWI and no seatbelts.

SAN JON - Friday night was the battle of the packs.

The San Jon Coyotes played the Dora Coyotes in the first boys and girls basketball games in 2A action.

The San Jon Lady Coyotes started the season 1-0 with a win over the Dora Coyotes.

“It took us awhile to warm up,” said Coach Lacey Bidegain. “But once the girls started to play good defense we started taking advantage of offensive opportunities. We are playing well as a team. We have three seniors who are showing a lot of leadership out on the court.”

Late in the third period, with 1.4 seconds left on the clock San Jon senior Janay Brashear inbounded the ball to junior Rana Gibson who hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Lady Coyotes a 23-22 lead.

The team only let Dora score four additional points in the final period for a final score of 35-26.

Gibson’s 3-pointer was a surprise to everyone in the building.

“I was thinking, ‘Just throw it up there.’ I shot it left handed and even I was shocked when it went in.” she said.

l Rana Gibson made 6 of 8 on field goals, with 2 rebounds and 1 3-pointer

l Danielle Lee made 7 of 11 field goals, with 6 rebounds, one assist and hit 1 of 2 free throws.
